Artistic Approach:
My interest in botanical art and illustration came into being alongside my early science training and experience. My love of natural history and curiosity about the form and function of organisms and their fascinating interrelationships, has remained a constant. For me botanical art is the obvious combination of science and art – of information, understanding, and wonder. Using images in graphite, pen and ink, and watercolor, I strive to portray the sometimes subtle, sometimes outrageous, structure, form, and color that plants employ in their particular life histories.
Native plants and native plant communities are a particular interest. I look for ways to use botanical art and illustration as a means of sharing the natural beauty and sheer delight of plants and other organisms while encouraging conservation of natural habitats.
Now, living in Montana, I rely on the nearby forests and mountains interspersed with trips to new places and my native New Zealand for inspiration. There is never any shortage.
