‘From Margaret’s Garden to the Mountains’, an exhibition of works by ‘The Botanicalists’

From Margaret’s Garden to the Mountains is a group exhibition of work from eight members of The Botanicalists, presenting original artworks taking Margaret Stoddart’s early botanical paintings as a starting point. The group is based in Otepoti/Dunedin and includes many BASNZ members. The Botanicalists present traditional botanical watercolours as well as botanical forms in jewellery, printed textiles, drypoint and silverpoint.

From Margaret’s Garden to the Mountains runs until 27 April on Fridays, Saturdays Sundays and public holidays at Stoddart Cottage in Diamond Harbour. Diamond Harbour is a short ferry ride from Lyttleton, and the exhibition is a short walk up from the ferry dock.

The Botanicalists individually are: Katharine Allard, Noelyn Buisman-Hung, Pam Hollow, Jane Marshall Fitzgerald, Anet Neutze, Zantedeschia Robini, Yvonne Vannoort, Kate Watts, and Sigurd Wilbanks.

Like her, our art strives towards a range of goals, some complementary, some in tension. The plant in and of itself, or as part of a community; fidelity to the details observed, or to the overarching experience of observation. Our botanically accurate studies gain clarity from stylised elements, while our more stylised works are enlivened by staying true to botanical facts.
