Wilma Blom

Wilma Blom has a broad-based background in marine geology, particularly micropalaeontology, and marine biology. For the past 35 years Wilma has worked in modern marine environments, from Bass Strait in Australia to coastal and estuarine locations in New Zealand. Much of this consisted of contract work with Regional Councils, Universities and Museums. She is predominantly involved in the identification and enumeration of marine fauna from deep-water Antarctic octocorals, echinoderms and crustaceans to New Zealand shallow estuarine fauna and the fauna that lives on kelp holdfasts.

This background set her up well for her current job as curator of the marine invertebrate collection at Auckland Museum which she has held since mid-2011. Currently a lot of her time is focussed on making the museum collections more accessible to our diverse audiences, especially digitally through our Collections Online.

Of her botanical art, Wilma says, ‘I cannot remember when I first began drawing, but it has been an intermittent hobby for most of my life. I have traversed a very broad range of subject matter and have tried a wide variety of media, including graphite, coloured pencils, watercolour, acrylics and pastels. However, I discovered my love for botanical art when, some years ago, I joined an art group run by Sandra Morris. Since then, my art has continued to develop and it is definitely one of my happy places.
