‘Breaking the Rules and having fun: Mixed media in Botanical Art’ Workshop

Heike Jane Zimmermann is a botanical artist and illustrator, with many styles of work in her repertoire.
Jane says,

This workshop is for those of us who want to put aside traditional rules and explore creative approaches and techniques in botanical art.
As a highly detail-oriented botanical artist and painter, I love to work with watercolours, but ... also with coloured pencils. Though the use of these often seems an ‘either or’ choice, I have found that mixing them, and other media, gives me great freedom and joy, and, leads to amazing results for my work that reap the benefits that go beyond their individual advantages.

In this workshop, I will share how I currently combine watercolour, colour pencil, pastel, soluble graphite and other media. This will include reflections on what I have learned along the way, experimenting with many different approaches, what I have felt has gone wrong, but also how much more there still is to discover.

There are, for example, some fundamental drawing techniques that I have found to stay true over time but, on the whole, this workshop is not so much about learning a particular “mixed media” approach. Rather, it is about finding joy in artistic experimentation and creativity, something that I believe is a central motivation that defines our love for botanical art. During these first 3 hours then, we will focus on just trying things our, exploring and sharing the results with each other and, most
importantly, having fun.’

Please note, this is a two-part workshop, with the demonstrations/teaching on the first day, after which we hope you will spend time trying out
the techniques learnt, with a one hour on the next day for any questions that came up after the initial workshop.
