Types of Plants suitable for BAWW25

Heritage/heirloom….

…are those grown for food: Crops that have been in cultivation IN NEW ZEALAND for minimum of 50 years:
Heirloom tomatoes, heirloom beans, heirloom corn, heirloom plums, heirloom apples, kumara.

Useful Crops….

…are crops grown for shelter, energy, clothing, medicine: Flax (used by maori for weaving, kete, mats, shelter etc), many of our native plants used by maori for Rongoa (healing), and for building canoes and shelters.

Wild Crop Relatives….


…are those wild species that can be hybridized with cultivated crops to impart new characteristics (such as resistance to disease - eg. manuka, or those species that are foraged wild plants e.g. puha.

Ancient Crops….

…are those crops that have been cultivated for hundreds or thousands of years and includes those varieties cultivated, or those gathered by indigenous people. They must have been growing in New Zealand for at least 50 year e.g. Bulrush, flax, taro.

So far these plants are being considered by artists who have submitted an expression of interest
